Steve Strout, a former St. Joseph High School multi-sport standout, has been named the Northern California Badminton Coach of the Year.
Strout, who coaches at Irvington High School in Fremont, Calif., is also in the running for the California Badminton Coach of the Year, which will be announced June 14 by the California Coaches’ Association.
Strout is a 1980 St. Joseph graduate who earned his teaching degree at Chico State (1984) and Masters degree from San Jose State (1992). At Irvington, he has coached badminton since 1991 as well as previously coached basketball (8 years), volleyball (8 years) and tennis (2 years).
Strout is a member of the California Intersholastic Federation North Coast Section advisory committee, having submitted proposals that have led to a Northern California and State Championship for Badminton that will start in 2016.
“It’s a nice honor,” Strout said. “It is kind of because my longevity and service to the sport, including the proposals to get the CIF to start a state championship for badminton.”
During the 57th CIF Coaches of the Year Banquet on June 14 in Sacramento, the CIF will honor Coaches of the Year in 18 sports.
